Six army personnel were saved in the nick of time when their truck lost balance while trying to avoid another vehicle on a highway and fell into the Upper Ganga canal early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred on National Highway 58 at Murad Nagar in Ghaziabad.
According to police officials, the truck was headed to Delhi from Meerut with six army jawans. It fell into the canal after breaking the roadside safety barrier around 8am.
“It was a foggy morning and we heard a loud bang at our nearby police post. Our personnel rushed to the spot and found that the truck fell straight into the canal. The army jawans swam to the top of the vehicle which did not submerge into the water fully. They were helped out by divers and boats available at the site,” said Raj Kumar Yadav, station house officer at Murad Nagar police station.
“All the six personnel were saved and brought to the banks of the canal. It seems the army vehicle lost balance while trying to avoid some other vehicle on the highway,” Yadav said.
The police said they have informed the authorities in Meerut and have also pressed into service two cranes to fish out the vehicle from the canal.
