A 27-year-old inmate of Dasna jail died on Tuesday under ‘mysterious’ circumstances, the police said. The district magistrate has written to the Ghaziabad district judge for a judicial inquiry in the matter.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP), HN Singh, said that the inmate, Haji Javed, was brought to MMG Hospital on Tuesday due to health complications.

However, the family of the deceased has alleged conspiracy behind the death. The family members alleged that two police personnel had ferried him to the MMG Hospital on Tuesday and left his body there. They alleged that he was beaten up by the police and he died of the injuries.

The police refuted the allegations. “The post-mortem examination of the body is being conducted and there is no injury mark on his body as alleged by his family,” SSP Singh said.

Javed was arrested on September 16 after getting caught by the Indirapuram police for his alleged role in a robbery case and lodged in Dasna jail.

“He was arrested by the police in the case of a robbery and later beaten up. There are several marks on his body and he was also bleeding from the nose. We suspect that our neighbours got him arrested as we have an enmity with them. Around two months ago, one of our neighbours harassed our sister and we had lodged an FIR against them,” said Masroor, Javed’s cousin.

“Since that day, they have been looking to avenge the complaint. We suspect that they got my brother falsely implicated in the robbery case. My brother worked as a fruit seller at Sahibabad vegetable market and had no criminal background,” he said.

District magistrate (DM) Ritu Maheshwari on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and also ordered for a post-mortem examination of the body. “The inquiry will reveal the facts in the case; whether the death resulted from foul play or due to deteriorating medical condition,” she said.

Javed’s family members said that he got married last year and his family said that his wife delivered a baby, a girl, eight days ago.

“After we received the information, we arrived at the hospital and saw his body, which had injury marks. We want justice,” Masroor said.
