Mob beats up Muslim man who was at Ghaziabad court to marry Hindu woman

The Muslim man, who works at a Noida firm, went to the court to register his marriage with Preeti Singh on Monday afternoon when the crowd attacked them in Ghaziabad.

A mob suspected to be members of a right-wing organisation allegedly beat up a Muslim man and damaged his car Monday afternoon after he arrived at the city’s tehsil to marry a Hindu woman.

Local police said on Tuesday that they had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident late Monday night and booked two suspects who were accompanied by more than half a dozen unidentified perople and thrashed the man.

Sahil Khan (24), a resident of Salarpur near Banghel in Noida and native of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Preeti Singh of Bijnor in western Uttar Pradesh had arrived at the tehsil to register their marriage.

“They had come to the tehsil to get married and this information was somehow leaked to the people seen in the mob. A video has also surfaced which was shot by a passerby. The police have taken a suo motu cognisance and lodged an FIR. The people in the mob who thrashed the man on the road will be identified soon and strict action will be taken,” said Vaibhav Krishna, senior superintendent of police at Ghaziabad.

Police at Sihani Gate police station have named two suspects, Navneet and Vinod Chaudhary as accused in the FIR. The attackers have been charged under IPC sections of 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 427 (causing damages).

Police said the man and the woman work together in Noida and wanted to marry each other.

“The woman was not assaulted but the man was taken on the street and thrashed in public. The man was later sent for medical examination but did not lodge any complaint with police,” said a police officer.

“The mob later damaged the man’s car in which the couple had arrived,” the officer said.
