Anand draws with Carlsen; Caruana stays in the lead

Yet another draw, coming with white pieces, did not serve Anand's cause, as the lead positions remained unchanged after the end of the Sao Paulo leg of the super tournament.
Armenian Levon Aronian was on the brink of the victory but missed it by a whisker against Fabiano Caruana of Italy who survived by the skin of his teeth. The other game between Francisco Vallejo Pons of Spain and Sergey Karjakin of Russia also ended in a draw leaving the points table similar to what it was before the start of the fifth round.
The event will now shift to Bilbao in Spain after a week's break.
Premier chess meet starts today
Kolkata: National champion Mary Ann Gomes will be the only woman in the fray in the 45-player field when the National Premier Chess Championships, the country's most important competition, begins here on Monday.
At stake, apart from a cheque of R1.5 lakh, is a berth in the 2013 World Cup, to be held in Tromse, Norway, for the winner.
The India contingent for international tournaments next year too will be decided on the basis of performance here.
So even though 2013 isn't a Chess Olympiad year, which possibly explains why GM Sandipan Chanda among others is skipping this, there is a lot to play for.
Also missing are GMs K Sasikiran, P Harikrishna, Parimarjan Negi, Koneru Humpy and defending champion GM Abhijit Gupta, but Dibyendu Barua, India's second GM after world champion Viswanathan Anand, will return to this format after four years. One of Barua's students, teenager Diptayan Ghosh, too will take part having been runners-up in the National B championship.
