Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa have pulled out of the Badminton Asian Championship to be held in China from April 19 to April 24. The duo, ranked 18th in women's doubles, have decided to withdraw from this event to concentrate on the India Open Super Series - which the capital will host from April 26 to May 1.

"There was no big reason for us to pull out except that we wanted to focus on our preparation for the Super Series. We have been practicing right after returning (after playing in Europe last month) and, this being the country's big event, we wanted to give it our 100 per cent," Jwala said told HT from Hyderabad. "We have conveyed this decision to the BAI. The decision to pull out from BAC was well thought out."

Ashwini Ponnappa will feature in the mixed doubles event where she partners Kona Tarun.

The Indian contingent announced for the BAC was second string after Saina Nehwal and P Kashyap - India's top singles players - also decided to skip the event for the Indian Open.
