The 37-year-old, who retires from F1 at the end of the season, recorded 1min 39.957 sec to edge out newly-crowned quadruple world champion team-mate German Sebastian Vettel.

Webber, who will start from the front of the grid for only the second time this season, equalled the Australian record of 13 poles set by Alan Jones, who was celebrating his 67th birthday on Saturday.

'Stop flashing finger'
Alain Prost has one particular piece of advice to offer Sebastian Vettel, as one four times F1 world champion to another. "If I see him I am going to give him the advice to stop celebrating with his finger," Prost told reporters with a grin.

Vettel's raised single digit has become a trademark of the German's victory celebrations. In India last weekend, he rang the changes by raising four fingers to celebrate becoming the sport's youngest quadruple champion.
