The decider came in the 83rd minute after the match went into extra time at the Ambedkar Stadium. Mizoram conceded a penalty after defender Vanlalhriata brought down striker Balasem inside the box. Roikhia Nongtou made no mistake in converting the penalty kick.
S.K. Bandhopadhyay, coach of the winning side said that though his team didn’t get much time for preparation, they still managed to win the event.
R. Lalmuankima, coach of the Mizo team, said the absence of a key player cost them dearly. “My left wing back was running fever. After the first half, I pulled him out,” he said.
Though SAI had a major share of the possession, they failed to capitalise on the chances that came their way. In the 34th minute, they came agonisingly close to scoring after Anwesan Das’s cross from the right found Bidhan Bala, but defender Lalrinsanga cleared the ball to safety.
