It was smooth sailing for second seed, Thailand's Nicha Lertpitaksinchai, as she got past Austrian Stephanie Hirsch 7-5, 6-4. She will take on India's Sheethal Goutham in the second round, who had to toil hard to defeat China's Chun-Yan He.

Fifth-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi sailed past Rishika Sunkara 6-4, 6-0 and will now play Kyra Shroff in the next round. Kyra demolished lucky loser Jasmine Kaur Bajaj 6-3, 6-1. However, it was curtains for eighth seed Sharmada Balu. She was shown the door by Italy's Stephanie Scimone 2-6, 3-6.

Abhijit takes lead
Chandigarh:
Local lad Abhijit Chadha returned the only sub-par card of the day as he took the lead after Round One of the Northern India Amateur Golf Championship here on Tuesday.

Abhijit shot a one-under 71 while Chikkarangapa from Bangalore followed him with a level par score along with Honey Baisoya of Delhi. Another Bangalore lad, Udayan Mane, shot a two-over 74 along with Sidharth Seth of Delhi to be tied third. Varoon Parmar of Chandigarh carded three-over 75 to finish fourth. The 20-year-old Abhijit overcame an indifferent start to finish the day on a high as he birdied the sixth, 13th, 14th and 17th holes. "The course was playing very tough today and I think I was not hitting the way I wanted. I am glad that chipping and putting really saved me and I could finish with the best score of the day," Abhijit, the winner of the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final 2011, said.
