The 29-year-old runner completed the 42.2-kilometer course on an island south of Guangzhou in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 11 seconds. Ji raised his arms at the finish line and later unfurled the South Korean national flag.

Yukihiro Kitaoka took silver in 2:12:46. The Japanese runner edged Qatar's Mubarak Hassan Shami, who faded after unsuccessfully battling Ji for the top spot in the final stretch of the race. The Qatari finished 7 seconds behind Kitaoka.
