Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the centre, which will initially cater to participants of the Commonwealth Games. One of its kind in South-East Asia, the centre has all sports-related surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitation facilities under one roof.
The 35-bed centre is capable of handling 2000 cases annually. With a total strength of 211, the centre has orthopedics, sports psychologists, fitness trainers, dieticians, rehabilitation experts and also masseurs.
“The idea was conceived to popularise sports medicine in the country and have rehabilitation in place for injured sportspersons. However, we had to fast track the project to make it available for the Commonwealth Games,” said Dr Deepak Chaudhary, head of SIC.
