A passenger plane carrying Russian ice hockey team Lokomotiv to a season-opening match crashed on Wednesday after takeoff, killing 43 people and leaving two survivors in grave condition.

May 4, 1949: Italian football club, Torino lost 22 members, including 18 players, in Turin, Italy.

Feb 6, 1958: English football champion Manchester United lost eight members, in Munich.

Aug 14, 1958: The Egyptian fencing team lost six members over the Atlantic Ocean.

Feb 16, 1961: US figure skating team lost 18 members in Belgium.

April 3, 1961: Players of Green Cross, a first-division Chilean soccer team, died after their plane crashed in to the Las Lastimas Mountains.

Sept 26, 1969: The Bolivian football team lost 25 members, in the Andes.

Nov 14, 1970: 26 players of Marshall University US college football team died in Huntington, West Virginia.

Oct 11, 1972: 30 members of an Uruguayan rugby club died in Chile.

Dec 13, 1977: University of Evansville men's basketball coach Bobby Watson and 14 players lost their lives in Evansville, Indiana.
