Lok Sabha took up for consideration the contentious bill to make the practice of instant triple talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the legislation was a must for gender equality and justice as despite an August 2017 Supreme Court verdict striking down the instant triple talaq, according to several media reports women are being divorced by ‘talaq-e-biddat’. One person was killed after four earthquakes hit Maharashtra’s Palghar in 12 minutes. A magnitude 3.8 earthquake shook Dahanu in the Talasari belt of Palghar district at 1:03am and was followed by 3.6, 2.9 and 2.8 till 1:15am. The tremors were felt in Boisar as well. (HT Photo)

Nalini Sriharan, convicted in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, was released on a month-long parole to make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding, from Vellore central prison in Tamil Nadu. In the 28 years of her incarceration, Nalini had been given only a day’s parole earlier when she attended the last rites of her father. She is the longest serving woman convict in the country. (AFP)

The Cabinet has cleared a proposal to create an emergency sugar reserve of four million tonnes and also decided to keep the price unchanged. Assam is on alert after Bhutan released excess water from a hydro power dam. The Druk Green Power Corporation Limited which runs the 60MW Kurichhu project in eastern Bhutan, had announced that it would release excess water from the 55 metre tall dam. A red alert is sounded for people residing on the banks of the Beki and Pahumara rivers in Barpeta district appealing them to move to higher ground. (PTI)

At least 39 people, including women and children, were killed and five injured in 12 districts of Bihar, when lightning struck them in the past 24 hours. The maximum number of deaths (eight) were reported from Jamui. The figure of 39 deaths due to lightning in the last 24 hours is highest since the beginning of the year.
