Anukreethy Vas, a 19-year-old college student from Tamil Nadu, beat 29 other contestants from across India to win Femina Miss India 2018 on Tuesday after impressing judges, including former VJ Malaika Arora and cricketer Irfan Pathan. She was crowned by Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar. Also seen are Haryana’s Meenakshi Chaudhary (1st Runner up) and Andhra Pradesh’s Shreya Rao (2nd Runner up). (PTI)

Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday visited the family of rifleman Aurangzeb who was abducted and killed by militants in Jammu and Kashmir on June 15. Sitharaman arrived in Jammu earlier in the day and flew to the Mendhar area of Rajouri district where she met the bereaved family. (PTI)

The BJP ended its almost 40-month alliance with the PDP on Tuesday and chief minister Mehbooba Mufti resigned, paving the way for direct Central rule. Under governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi will embark on a hardline security-centric policy with the scaling up of counter-insurgency operations, especially in the four districts of South Kashmir --Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag and Pulwama-- that have become the hotbed of militancy in the last two years.
