Cape-astrophe: From superheroine to superfail — it’s easy to mess up the cape look. Learn from singer Katy Perry who falters with her costume-y dress and ends up looking matronly. Singer Lana Del Rey takes superwoman chic too seriously with a frumpy black cape which looks entirely out of place, while actor Sushmita Sen makes us want to cry foul with that velvet trimmed eyesore. Tapping the trend: Our own runways have been studded with designer versions of capes that vary from Victorian daintiness to shimmer-ridden creations. From fashion veteran Ritu Kumar to the new design crusaders like Masaba Gupta, the cape has been a favourite with many Indian designers. "I think capes are sporty chic and also, very travel friendly," says Masaba. We loved what we saw for the Autumn/Winter season at last month’s fashion week and they gave us a big style inspiration! Power shoulders: If you are not the kind who likes to go for sharp epaulettes on your shoulder to get a diva posture, then opt for a looped cape. Reminiscent of the classic dupatta drape, the detachable version of the style on actor Kate Hudson by Atelier Versace at the Oscars lent the simple curve-hugging ivory dress style-infused power. | Making style history: Be it topcoats for men or stylish fish mouth collared cloak-style toppers, the cape has been in fashion for long. From the Chaucerian days of The Canterbury Tales to present day runway — the cape can be re-imagined through fashion history. (HT PHOTO)

The game changer cape: Here’s how to do superwoman chic. Singer Anushka Manchanda looked foolproof in this Nikhil Thampi cape, which she wore last year for an event. The closed neck and asymmetric exaggerated silhouette added grit to the otherwise simple look. The sheer fabric also saved the look from being overwhelming, with just the right amount of skin tease. Steal Anushka’s look by styling your cape with a pair of tattooed leggings and a sharp pair of daringly-high heels. (HT PHOTO)

From vintage-infused capelets to full-fledged capes that cascade down from the shoulders, and finish with a train at the back. The cape has been hot for a few seasons now, so if you haven’t experimented yet, now is the time. Take some visual inspiration:Playing with plumes: Lebanese fashion designer Zuhair Murad has often adorned his designs with gilded capes that make for charming, super glamorous creations. We loved this plume-perfect design from his haute couture Paris, spring 2013 collection. We can imagine some of our Bollywood ladies looking red carpet-perfect in this one! (HT PHOTO)
