For office-goers, the worst part about summer is having to put on formal pants and shirts that are more or less drenched in sweat even before you can reach office. But the lines are blurring, and city stylists will tell you that it’s no longer a no-no to wear shorts to work, or shorten the hemlines of your dresses to battle the heat. Here are a few tips and tricks. A cut or two: If you’re uncomfortable with short or strappy outfits, why not go for a few cuts that allow for a little breeziness, without showing much skin. "Cuts at the back, and on the sleeves, and sometimes at the waist too, are very stylish," says Garg.

Shorts: "There’s no reason why you can’t wear shorts to work if they are reasonably long," says Garg. She adds, "Pair them with simple, button-down shirts, add a thin blazer and a constructed bag to ensure that the overall look is formal." If you work in a creative field (non-corporate and, therefore, less formal) scenario, bring on the colours and feel free to go just a wee bit shorter.

Short dresses: Avoid these in the office, but for a work event or party, it’s fine to sport a dress that ends more than just a few inches above the knees. "In such cases, avoid low necklines and sleeveless or strappy styles. Overall, it should not be too revealing," says stylist Tania Garg, adding, "Dark colours are also a safe bet for keeping it classy."

Bermudas: Cropping your pants by a good five or 10 inches keeps things chic. "It’s airier than wearing full pants and, for the conservative bunch, it isn’t treading too far from covered-up territory," explains stylist Mahua Jain.
