The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games finally opened on July 24 after being postponed for a year. But concerns over rising Covid-19 cases meant that the cheering crowds of spectators weren't allowed at this edition of the games. This unprecedented measure was designed to avoid a superspreader event and reassure a nervous Japanese public that opposed holding the Olympics during the pandemic. The Olympics may officially be without supporters but at venues across Tokyo national delegations have brought the noise, replacing fans kept out by coronavirus countermeasures.
