PHOTOS: A scenic trek to the ancient Naneghat Pass and Caves

Naneghat is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats, located between Junnar and the Konkan coast. Nane means coin and ghat means pass. The entire pass is around 120 km to the north of Pune. This was an ancient trading route which was used as a tolling booth, renowned for a cave which has Hindu Sanskrit inscriptions in Brahmi script. The pass was of prime importance and the inscriptions, rest houses and steps are proof of the fact. The inscriptions have been traced back to between the 1st and 2nd century BCE.
