The 12th edition of Pune Design Festival is being organised fromFebruary 16-17 at Hotel Hyatt Regency Pune, by Association of Designers of India (ADI).

Ashwini Deshpandefounding member ADI, speaking to Hindustan Times shared the details into the event aimed at encouraging innovative and creative thinking in the design industry.

What is Pune Design Festival and the objective behind organising it?

Pune Design Festival is a conference to celebrate the power of creativity and design thinking and this is the 12th edition of the festival.

As a community of practising design professionals in Pune, we decided to celebrate design and spread awareness about the immense possibilities and potential.

This was way back in 2004-2005 when there was very low awareness about the profession in the city. In the beginning, the event was meant to be a celebration of design through conference, workshops, installations & mentoring sessions for people in the city.

Within one year of time, it started gaining momentum across other cities, corporates and educational institutes. This was very encouraging as it clearly stated the need for a well-curated design conference planned by designers that ensures the quality of content & interactions.

What are the highlights of the festival?

This year, the conference will be opened with a keynote by Padma Shri Bunker Roy. This is a highly anticipated talk of his work on Barefoot College has been path-breaking.

We also look forward to a talk by cross-cultural designer Tarek Atrissi who has designed the identity for Qatar nation, Arabic fonts for Apple and co-created several cultural museums.

Some of the other highlights are hands-on workshops, movie screenings, panel discussions and mentoring sessions.

Also, the three days will entail 22 highly interactive talks, 6 workshops, 3 movie screenings, 2 mentoring sessions, a panel discussion and exciting design awards nights.

One of the highlights of PDF 2018 will be a memorial session on Late Prof MP Ranjan conducted by Neils Peter Flint, sustainability visionary and Swapnil Chaturvedi, a social innovator.

Could you please elaborate on the theme, DESIGNISM?

As a community, we believe in responsible design and this year’s theme DESIGNISM is all about how design as a thought, practice and philosophy help us in improving lives.

In the same context, we are keen to hear how Flints (one of the speakers) have looked at sustainability as a backbone of every action and how Swapnil Chaturvedi (another speaker) is using design thinking as a tool for improving sanitation for urban slums.

Who are the major speakers at the conference?

Pune Design Festival is the flagship event of Association of Designers of India.

We have delegates and speakers not just from India, but from several other countries. Content is highly curated and only the best speakers are invited to speak around specific themes every year.

Over the years, we had some outstanding speakers that include innovator & education reformist Sonam Wangchuk, Oscar award winner Resul Pookutty, communication expert Sonal Dabral, Italian designers from Alessi family, British thinker John Thackara and many more.
