Dada JP Vaswani: An excellent mentor who transformed the lives of many, writes Aruna Jethwani

Dada could pinpoint the root cause of your unpleasant karmas. And surprisingly, he led you through the thorny path, gently and carefully, saying, “If you try to avoid an unpleasant experience, it will repeat itself till you learn the lesson, it is meant to teach you.”, says Aruna Jethwani

Very few people know that Dada Jashan Pahlajrai Vaswani was a scientist by education and spiritual master by choice. From his young college days he lived in the company of his uncle Sadhu TL Vaswani, a saint par excellence, a stalwart educationist, a great visionary and a humanist. His influence by way of philosophy, prayer, simplicity and purity touched Dada’s every aspect of life. Born on August 2, 1918 with a beautiful smile Dada JP Vaswani soon reflected his master’s brilliant light. While experimenting on the thesis with the subject ‘refraction of light’ he discovered the true light within. This discovery is a fascinating narrative for all the seekers.

Dada was humility proverbial. He did not allow anyone to touch his feet saying, ‘I am guru of none, but disciple of all. Pray to the master or the supreme who takes care of all.’ Dada’s spirituality was manifest in his love for all humans rich or poor, birds and animals, rivers and hills. Sea waves with their ceaseless rhythm fascinated him. He often meditated on the waves. Out of that great love was born great compassion for all creatures of life. His secularist vision proclaimed to stop all killings.

An excellent mentor, he transformed the lives of many, including this humble self. Dada was the principal of Mira’s College for girls from 1962-1975. Although my interaction with him was limited to an interview for lectureship, later in life he made a deep impact on mind and soul. Being rational, I one day asked him, “What is God?” He asked me in return, “What comes between 1 and 2? Go and find out.” “Space”, I stammered. “That space is God,” he replied, because as per the Hindu philosophy, the omnipresent is everywhere. There is pure positive energy vibrating everywhere in this timeless, straight line called time. Every tree is a Shiva, every seed is creator. Every bit in nature is throbbing in vibration.

Dada could pinpoint the root cause of your unpleasant karmas. And surprisingly, he led you through the thorny path, gently and carefully, saying, “If you try to avoid an unpleasant experience, it will repeat itself till you learn the lesson, it is meant to teach you.”

Women empowerment was dear to his heart and he urged women to go for the best higher education with Indian values and ideals.

I can never forget one piece of dialogue from his talk given at hotel Sun-n-Sand. He said, “Leave all your problems and worries here. I will take up a broom and sweep them away.” He was a true burden bearer. He also asked others to do the same. “Did you see him on the road? Did you leave him with the load?” His teachings are simple, wisdom mixed with humour. He is referred to a guru of positive pragmatism. He could draw people from all walks of life and of all ages. His books are equally simple to read, with practical suggestions. A great orator, he has addressed many conferences at home and abroad. Several awards have been conferred on him.

Many devotees have experienced blissful joy by getting a glimpse of his ray of light. There are many lights mostly invisible, emanating from his aura. Says a devotee, “I wish to be in his orbit all the time. The reason is I feel lighter and carefree in his presence. In today’s tension loaded world, this is all that we want.
