Market watch: Customers feel the pinch as vegetable prices soar in Pune

Rainfall and thunderstorms have impacted the vegetable production, thus bringing the supply down and increasing the prices

The prices of onions, potatoes, green chillies and capsicum went up by 15 per cent at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee( APMC) on Sunday ahead of Ramadan, which starts on May 5.

On Sunday, 150 trucks of vegetables were delivered at the Market Yard. The cost of potatoes have increased to Rs 100-Rs 150 per 10 kilogrammes from Rs 80-Rs 120 per 10 kilogrammes last week. Ten kilogrammes of onions cost Rs 70-Rs 100 as against Rs 40-Rs 80.

“Approaching Ramadan month and heavy rainfall and thunderstorm has affected the vegetable production and so, the price rise. I see this situation continuing for the next few weeks,” said Vilas Bhujbal, president, Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard traders’ and agents’ association, Pune.

A total of 10 tempos of capsicum and 5,000 bags of garlic have arrived at APMC, Pune on Sunday. A total of 60 tempos of onions arrived from the Agra and Indore. Five trucks of green peas arrived in Pune from Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat on Sunday. Each truck holds ten to twelve tonnes of vegetables.
