Mastermind behind Pune ATM card-cloning racket arrested

The police were searching for the two, who had changed their phone numbers and left their registered addresses. The cyber crime cell of Pune police arrested the mastermind behind an automated transfer machine (ATM) card-skimming racket, and his aide, on Thursday.

The racket came to light in October 2017, after a case was registered at Koregaon Park police station. Four people were arrested over possession of money, card skimmers, cloned cards, pinhole cameras, routers, cables and cash. However, the police were on the lookout for the brain behind the thefts. The arrested people were identified as Rohit Nayar and Yasir Abdul Sayyed. A resident of Thane, 36-year-old Sayyed was identified as the mastermind of the racket, according to the police. He was arrested from Mumbai by city police.

However, after months, the police found Nayar through his updates on Facebook, said a statement from Sudhir Hiremath, deputy commissioner of police, cyber crime and economic offence wing.

The accused targeted ATMs of various banks, where security guards were not present. They fixed skimmers at the ATMs and stole users' credentials from them. The information was then used to clone their bank cards and used for transactions.

Sayyed is educated till Class 5 and acquired the skills from a Nigerian national. He had met the Nigerian national in Delhi, where he worked earlier, according to the police.
