Jignesh Mevani, member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Gujarat, was booked for defamation and identity theft, for sharing a picture of Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, self-proclaimed spiritual leader and Shefali Vaidya, a columnist from Pune.

On May 29, Mevani had tweeted a picture of Adityanath and Ravi Shankar with Vaidya's picture digitally pasted on their side. The picture was displayed alongside a similar picture from a scene the movie OMG: Oh My God!

Mevani had captioned it as, "Arre re..isko dekhkar seriously bolne lag gaya, "Oh my god!"..bahut filmy ho gaya yeh toh. Did art predict real life? Film ki atrah, bahut bade actors hai...dramebaaz" and cited a Facebook page by the name of Indian Athiests as the source of the picture.

According to the police, Vaidya's picture used in the said image was taken from her personal Facebook account without her permission and she has mentioned the same in her complaint.

"Now let the law take its course. This is not just my fight alone. This is the fight of every woman who has been bullied by people in a position of power," tweeted Vaidya on Tuesday evening.

A case under Section 500 (punishment for defamation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66(c) (punishment for identity theft) of Information Technology Act, 2000 was registered at Paud police station in Pune rural police jurisdiction on Sunday.
