Mother and child die after heavy rain causes wall collapse in Pune

Two people including a woman and her daughter were killed while her son sustained injuries after a wall of their house collapsed following heavy rainfall on Friday. The deceased were identified as Sheetal Shirsagar, 25, and her five-year-old daughter Divya Shirsagar. Pranav, the deceased woman’s 3-year-old son was injured in the incident, according to the police.
Police officials said that the injured child was taken to Nobel Hospital in Hadapsar and is undergoing treatment.
The incident happened in Gopalpatti area of Manjari Budrukh near Hadapsar during the afternoon downpour. The deceased woman’s husband, Sheshnarayan Shirsagar, 31, works as a driver in the city and was not at home when the incident occurred. Most parts of city reported heavy rain, which according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is part of the retreating monsoon.
Assistant police inspector HB Khopade of Hadapsar police station, said, “The two got scared after the tin roof of their house dislodged. On their way out, the wall fell on their head.”
Heavy rainfall caused power outage and tree falling incidents in various parts of the city. At least three branches of trees had collapsed in Wanowrie area and an electricity pole was damaged in the defence area in Wanowrie.
Similar incidents were reported from various parts of the city including Baner and Balewadi. Camp area witnessed power outage for an hour.
