RK Padmanabhan, police commissioner, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), known as a strict disciplinarian in the police circle, has suspended and transferred at least a dozen police personnel for dereliction of duty during the past one year.
Padmanabhan has been taking a series of proactive measures aimed at providing relief to the area residents. His “open door” policy, wherein complainants come directly to the commissioner with their grievances, has been widely appreciated by citizens.
Talking about the suspension, Padmanabhan said, “The action was taken as the police officials were not performing their duties. The officials also mistreated the public. I suspended the officials with immediate effect after probing into the grievances filed by the residents.”
Meanwhile, the residents have described the development as positive. According to them, the police chief’s actions have restored the confidence of public in the police force. The residents have applauded Padmanabhan for upholding the cause of people by suspending the police staff who mistreated residents.
Maruti Bhapkar, activist said,“The PCMC police chief is taking action against officials is a welcome step as it has helped building the confidence of the citizens in the police force. However, the deep rooted corruption at the police station and political interference in police functioning must be curbed and citizens will offer their full support to the police commissioner on this citizen centric initiative. Currently, we are seeing that the lower ranks of the policemen are not afraid of their senior due to rampant corruption in the police force. The accountability of the police officials has to be fixed for a safe and secure Pimpri-Chinchwad .”
