Pune corporator Deepak Mankar booked for driving land dealer to suicide

Deepak Mankar, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and corporator from Pune, has been booked for abetment to suicide of local land dealer identified as Jitendra Haribhau Jagtap, 53. Five people were arrested on Sunday evening in the case.
“We have arrested five people seen in a photograph submitted by the complainant (deceased man's son),” said RN Mohite, senior police inspector, Samarth police station. The five people have been identified as Vinod Bhole, Sudhir Sutar, Amit Tanpure, Atul Pawar and Vishant Kamble.
Along with Mankar, two others identified as Vinod Bhole and Sudhir Karnataki, have also been booked in the case.
Jagtap's body was found in two parts near Hadapsar railway station after he allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of an oncoming train on Saturday. Jagtap's death was recorded as an accidental death by the Pune railway police.
A suicide note was recovered from his office in Rasta peth, which is owned by corporator Mankar.
Based on the note and a complaint by Jagtap's son, Jayesh Jitendra Jagtap, 28, a case was registered at Pune Railway police station on Sunday morning and then transferred to Samarth police station.
“He was disturbed for the past three months. On the night of June 1, when we met, we discussed threats issued by Deepak Mankar to make us disappear. He had told my father that he can re-claim the office plot from him overnight. He sent men, who are on-record criminals, to re-claim the plot. Deepak Mankar is responsible for this entire incident,” claimed Jayesh.
On Friday, seven people, including a man identified as Vinod Bhole had come to the deceased’s office and got into a heated argument, according to Jayesh.
“On Monday he had mentioned to me that he was under pressure from Mankar regarding the land on which his office was,” said Shailesh Jagtap, head constable at Kashkar police station.
While Deepak Mankar himself remained unavailable for comment, Ankush Kakade, a spokesperson of Natonalist Congress Party (NCP) said, “The police will conduct their investigaion in the case and Deepak Mankar will cooperate. Both Jagtap and Mankar knew each other well, but we do not want to comment on it as the matter is under investigation.”
A case under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Samarth police station against Mankar, Bhole and Karnataki. Police inspector Ramdas Khomane of Samarth police station will investigate the case.
