Pune police report six cases of chain-snatching in an hour

Six cases of chain-snatching has been registered at various police stations across the city on Monday morning.

The chain snatchers specifically targeted female senior citizens. The police officials are of the view that there is single gang responsible for the incidents that took place in quick succession, beginning 7:30 am till 8:45 am.

In the first case, two unidentified motorcycle-borne chain snatchers decamped with a gold chain belonging to a senior citizen, who was on her morning walk on Laxmi road. Thereafter, the chain snatchers struck another senior citizen near Phadke haud and decamped with another victim’s gold mangalsutra. In the third incident, the chain snatchers took away the gold mangalsutra of an old woman near Regional College of Management (RCM) college in the central part of the city. Similarly, the accused snatched a senior citizen’s gold chain in Wanowrie and a gold chain of another woman in Bibvewadi. 

In the sixth incident, the chain snatchers fled with a gold chain belonging to an 83-year-old woman Nalini Unawane who registered a complaint at the Samarth police station. The cases regarding chain-snatching have been lodged at the Faraskhana and Vishrambaug police stations. Meanwhile, the crime branch and local police stations have launched an investigation into the said cases and closed circuit television (CCTV) footage was being examined to nail the accused.

Shirish Sardeshpande, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) crime, said that four teams have been formed to nab the culprits. “ We are working on it and as many as six cases of chain-snatching have been lodged in the city,” he said.

8.45 am Lokhande Talim, 2.05 gms stolen
