Pune records two cases of online fraud on May 4

Two cases of cheating were lodged at the Samarth and Vishrantwadi police stations on Saturday. In the first case, a 65-year-old man lodged a case against unidentified persons at Samarth police station for allegedly cheating him of Rs 41,500 on May 4.

According to the police, the accused who earned the victim’s trust via telephonic conversations, asked him to share his Aadhaar card number. The accused, then, used the details to transfer the amount from the victim’s bank account via unified payments interface (UPI) mode of transaction. A case against unknown persons has been registered under Sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act at Samarth police station.

In the second case, a 35-year-old woman was cheated of Rs 9.02 lakh by an unidentified person on the pretext of marriage. According to the Vishrantwadi police, the accused contacted the victim via an online marriage portal. In a bid to send her gifts, the accused asked her to deposit the said amount as advance for those gifts. After receiving the money, the accused cut off all communication with the victim. A case under relevant sections of the IPC and IT Act has been registered at the Vishrantwadi police station.
