A man, a woman believed to be his extra-marital lover and two of their friends were arrested on Sunday for killing the man’s wife and their eight-month-old son.

The deceased woman has been identified as Ashwini Bhondave, 25, and the child as Anuj Bhondave, according to police. The main accused is the husband and father, Datta Bhondhve, 30, a resident of Maval.

Two others arrested have been identified as Prashant Bhor, 25, and Pawan Jadhav, 21, while the woman arrested in the case is Sonali Jawle, 24.

Ashwini and Datta Bhondave had been married for four years and Jawle, a clerk at a local high school in Hinjewadi, who met the co-accused Datta on social media, has known him for at least two years.

The police are looking for one other person as well in the case.

The investigation was carried out by crime branch and officials of Wakad and Hinjewadi police stations and led to the discovery that Datta Bhondave had put out a contract of Rs 2 lakh for the murder of his family.

However, Datta and Ashwini’s 4-year-old daughter, Anushka Datta Bhondave, was in Nighoje, near Mahalunge, with her grandfather on the night of the murder.

“They had planned this for the past month. He told us the incident happened at 9:30 pm, but he reported it only at 11:30 pm. His wounds also looked superficial,” said senior police inspector Nitin Vaykar, while explaining the reason behind police suspicion against Datta.

Datta was driving with his wife and child in a Volkswagen Polo through Nerhe, around four km from the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway when the incident happened.

“He stopped the car under the pretext of nausea. When he got out, the attackers (Prashant Bhor and Pawan Jadhav) entered the vehicle and strangled his wife, Ashwini and probably when the child stared crying, they killed him as well,” said Raghunath Unde, police inspector (crime), Hinjewadi police station.

The two assailants, Bhor and Jadhav, known to Datta , then asked him to take the car off the road.

Datta is suspected to have handed over his mobile phone and that of his wife’s, her gold necklace and Rs 50,000 in cash to the two.

“He (Datta) then informed the police (posing as a victim),” said PI Unde.

He told the police that the two men forced their way into their cars in order to rob them and killed the two in a violent robbery. Based on his complaint, a case under Section 302 (murder), 379 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Hinjewadi police station on Sunday morning. However, the charges and the accused will now be updated based on the developments.

“She (Ashwini) was with us for the past four days. They had dinner and left from our place in Dange chowk at 8:30 pm,” said Mohan Shinde, cousin of the deceased woman. “Her face was completely black (when they saw her). We had to cremate the baby and our girl together with a heavy heart,” added Shinde.

While Ashwini is a resident of Wakad and a native of Chandkhed village, Datta’s family members are natives of Ravet and lived in a house in Maval.

“Bhor has a history of vehicle theft cases against Datta as a juvenile,” said Ganesh Shinde, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 3.
