Satara girl Priyanka Mohite scales world’s fourth highest mountain Mt Lhotse

Earlier, in 2013, Mohite became the youngest climber from the state to scale Mount Everest when she was 21. She was also the third youngest Indian to do so.

A 26-year-old Satara-based mountaineer, Priyanka Mohite, successfully climbed Mount Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world at 8,516 metres (27,940 ft), on Wednesday.

Interestingly, this was Priyanka Mohite’s second attempt to scale the mountain. She was part of a Lhotse expedition team that attempted the summit in 2015. On that attempt, the team faced adverse weather conditions due to an earthquake in Nepal. The Indian Army finally asked the team to cancel the expedition. (HT PHOTO)

Earlier, in 2013, Mohite became the youngest climber from the state to scale Mount Everest when she was 21. She was also the third youngest Indian to do so.

Mohite left Satara on April 23 and she started her expedition on April 25. She did her acclimatisation at camps one and two (6,510m) on May 6 and was waiting for the window for her summit attempt. On May 16, she got the opportunity and completed the climb.

Interestingly, this was her second attempt to scale the mountain. She was part of a Lhotse expedition team that attempted the summit in 2015. On that attempt, the team faced adverse weather conditions due to an earthquake in Nepal. The Indian Army finally asked the team to cancel the expedition.

In 2016, on September 29, Mohite climbed Mt Kilimanjaro.

“Mt Lhotse is quite difficult and challenging. In the last section of the peak, it becomes very tough. We congratulate the young and brave girl for her success,” said Umesh Zirpe of Giripremi, the Pune-based mountaineering outfit.

“I received her call at around 2pm when they were climbing down. She is on her way to base camp,” said Zirpe.
