Seven of family booked for abetment to suicide in Pune

A case under Sections 498(a) (husband or his family subjecting woman to cruelty), 304(b) (dowry death), 306 (abetment to suicide) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the seven at Lashkar police station on Wednesday.

The woman’s husband, identified as Ismail Qureshi, 24, is a resident of Jafreen lane in Camp, and owner of a butcher store, according to police.

A case under Sections 498(a) (husband or his family subjecting woman to cruelty), 304(b) (dowry death), 306 (abetment to suicide) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the seven at Lashkar police station on Wednesday. Assistant police inspector (API) VS Salunkhe of Lashkar police station is investigating the case.

The seven people including, the husband, his parents, Hassak Qureshi, 55, and Ruksana Qureshi, 50; two brothers, Mohsin, 23, and Fayaz, 30 and their wives, Nagma, 20, and Munni, 28, were sent to magisterial custody remand (MCR) in Yerwada central jail by a local court on Wednesday, API Salunkhe said.

“She hanged herself from the metal angle in the ceiling with her own dupatta (piece of clothing). Her brother filed a complaint against the family. The deceased woman had two brothers and two sisters,” API Salunkhe said.

Shabiya married Ismail on April 20, 2015 and lived with him, his parents, brothers and their wives, all named in the case. The family members repeatedly asked the deceased woman to get money from her parents besides physically and mentally torturing her, which eventually drove Shabiya to commit suicide.
