SPPU V-C to take strict action against colleges which run courses without AICTE approval

The vice-chancellor of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), on Monday, assured to take strict measures against a number of colleges who had been running various specialised courses without the approval ofthe All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This was after a circular surfaced on the university website directing colleges to stop operation of thepost graduate diploma in business management (PGDBM) course following the inability to seek the statutory body’s approval.

Despite the circular, a number of colleges had still continued the course along likepost graduate diploma in marketing management (PGDMM), post graduate diploma in financial services (PGDFS), post graduate diploma in foreign trade (PGDFT), post graduate diploma in computer applications (PGDCA), post graduate diploma in international business (PGDIB), all without AICTE’s approval. Condemning the actions of the colleges, vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said,“We understand that a number of colleges have been carrying out the said courses without the approval which is a serious offence. We will be directing another notice to the colleges to stop operation of the courses at the earliest.”

In addition to this, now colleges of architecture imparting Bachelors of Architecture (BArch) and Master of Architecture (MArch) courses will have to get the approval of both the Council of Architecture as well as AICTE, the notice had mentioned earlier. These architecture colleges have been given a time frame, whereby they need to apply and get the approval before the release of the results of the first batch of students.

According to a directive released by AICTE earlier, colleges running technical and vocational courses have to get the mandatory approval of the body to operate.Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA),Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and other courses in hotel management and catering technology, management and pharmacy are run in colleges affiliated under the university which are required to have the approval.

Now from the new academic year, deemed and private universities across the state and the country need the AICTE approval to run professional and technical courses, the AICTE officials said. Those colleges who have not complied and continue to run courses without the approval will have to face charges of criminal offence, the officials added.

At SPPU, the department of management sciences (PUMBA) along with the department of computer science will be applying for the recognition to run the management and MCA courses, the SPPU officials confirmed.
