To install ICT-enabled devices for better learning, says, Zunjarrao Shankar, principal, Modern College

Zunjarrao Rajendra Shankar, principal and head, department of botany at Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Shivajinagar. He is a board member of botany, Savitribai Phule Pune University and has also been given the ‘best principal award’ from SPPU in 2014. Here, he talks about how he plans to take the institution to greater heights.

What steps are being taken to enhance students’ skills?

There are 45 specially designed skill development courses in our college. Idea I3 - invention, innovation and incubation club has been established in our college to promote such activities among students. We have been getting good response from students about it.

Tell us about your college?

Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Shivajinagar, Pune was established in 1970. It is a multi-faculty, co-educational Higher Education Institute, permanently affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). The college is known to be a premier institute of Progressive Education Society. Our College imparts education mainly in the Arts, Science and Commerce streams and is presently offering 25 UG, 19 PG courses and 7 Ph.D. courses. One of the UG courses, viz. B,Sc. (Blended) Bio-Sciences runs in collaboration with University of Melbourne, Australia, IISER, Pune and SPPU. The college is carefully nurturing all round development of over 8,181 students, through academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Out of 8,181 students, 6805 students are enrolled for UG courses, 1331 students are enrolled for PG courses and 62 students are perusing their research leading to Ph.D. degrees. There are 10 well equipped Science Departments in our College. All of them are offering PG courses in addition to UG courses.

What are your plans for the future?

Plans are on to install management information system (MIS) for communication between various departments and the college administration and also between the college administration and the parent body( the Progressive Education Society). A vice-principal will be appointed who will look after post graduate courses, research centres as well as office administration. Every classroom and laboratory will be equipped with closed circuit television (CCTV) facilities for the safety of students and staff members. For effective teaching-learning experience, information and communication technologies (ICT)- enabled technologies would be used. We will have improved infrastructure for the virtual classroom, virtual laboratory, digital record room and digital library. The college library will have an online Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) system through which the users can check the availability of books, without even entering the college premises. A modernised gymnasium with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities will be made available. The gym will also have the professional instructors for scientifically accurate workouts and training. Every game or sport will be taught by a specialised coach.

Please explain the steps being taken for the betterment of students?

Research journals are being published. E-books and e-journals are also made available for the students. We have also created digital herbarium and digital museums.
