The Border Security Force (BSF) and the narcotics cell of the Punjab Police have arrested a drug smuggler in the district and recovered 12.7kg heroin and a mobile with Pakistani SIM card near the fence along the border following his interrogation.
Giving details, inspector general of police (IGP), Ferozepur range, and BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) TR Meena said Jeewan Singh of Gajniwala, a border village, was allegedly in touch with Pakistani smugglers through social media and used to smuggle contraband to Delhi and Chandigarh from here.
Following a tip off, Jeewan was apprehended on Tuesday evening. After his interrogation, a search operation was launched on Wednesday by the personnel of 118 battalion of BSF, who recovered 13 packets containing 12.7kg heroin and a mobile phone with Pakistani SIM card near the fence under the New Gajniwala border outpost in Ferozepur sector.
A case has been registered against the accused and further investigations are on, they said.
