Four construction labourers were killed after the rope of a lift snapped and it fell down from a height at the Talwandi Sabo Power Plant at Banawali in this district in the wee hours of Sunday.
Dinesh Chaurasia, 30, and Parkash Kumar, 24, died on the spot; they were from Uttar Pradesh, while Dinesh Prajapati, 23, of Rajasthan and Gurdeep Singh of Kusla village in Mansa died in hospital after they fell down from a height of 250 feet.
The company reportedly fired crackers after the completion of a chimney while the labourers were still giving finishing touches to the chimney when the rope of the lift in which the labourers were standing, broke down.
The two labourers were rushed to a Bathinda hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. The post-mortem is being conducted at the Bathinda civil hospital while the police have registered a case under Section 304-A (death caused due to negligence) against unidentified people and started investigations.
One out of three units of the power plant is almost complete and was being given finishing touches. It is likely to be inaugurated in the last week of November.
Along with a few others, L&T Company has been given the charge for construction of the power plant. On Sunday morning, the labourers were working under the L&T Company that announced compensation for the victims.
A spokesperson of L&T said, "A compensation of Rs 18 lakh has been announced for each victim. The incident was unfortunate and we are inquiring into the matter."
SSP Narinder Bhargava said, "We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. Death has been caused due to negligence but it would be clear after the investigation as to who is to be blamed for it."
