A 49-year-old woman set herself ablaze at Bhankhar village of Sanaur assembly segment in Patiala district on Friday. Deceased Balwinder Kaur was allegedly upset over ill-treatment by her son, daughter-in-law and other family members.
Police have registered a case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against six persons. The accused include victim’s son Narinderpal Singh (25), daughter-in-law Jaswinder Kaur (22), father-in-law Ujjagar Singh (66), mother-in-law Rajwinder Kaur (65), brother-in-law Amarjit Singh (45) and Amarjit’s wife Paramjit Kaur (42).
Investigation officer Ranbir Singh said Balwinder poured kerosene oil on herself, when other members of the family were asleep, and set herself ablaze. Police said that the victim died on her way to the hospital, as she had received 100-percent burn injuries.
Meanwhile, Balwinder’s maternal family has alleged that she was murdered by the accused. Police added that the victim’s son and other members of her in-laws’ family used to question Balwinder’s character and allege her of having an illicit relationship with a man.
“Both the parities quarrelled over this multiple times in the past,” the IO said. Balwinder’s husband had died in 2009, but she, along with her son, continued to live at her in-laws’ place.
“Investigation is on and the police is minutely investigating the sequence of events in the crime to figure out whether it was a suicide or murder,” the IO said. Meanwhile, no arrest has been made so far.
