A cleaner stumbled across 5kg gold worth over `1.3 crore stashed in an aircraft toilet compartment at the Amritsar international airport on Tuesday.
The plane belonging to Qatar Airways had arrived from Doha at 2.30 am. Sources said a packet was spotted inside a toilet of the plane when it was being cleaned. “The packet was heavy and when a cleaner opened it, he found gold inside. The packet was later handed over to customs officials,” said official sources. The seizure included four gold bars (one kg each), two gold biscuits (116 gm each) and 100 gold coins (798 gm total).
The huge haul has left customs officials baffled. They are trying to ascertain how this huge quantity of gold was sneaked in without anyone noticing it at the Doha airport. “The incident raises a question mark on security checks at the airport,” said an official. Earlier, the department detained one of its officials and recovered two gold biscuits from him. It is believed that biscuits were given to the official, indentified as Vajinder, to allegedly facilitate a passenger with a gold consignment
“We can’t say at this point of time that both these incidents are interlinked. But we are conducting a thorough investigation to find out the truth,” said a customs official.
Official held with Two gold biscuits
Hours before the huge haul of gold at Sree Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar, a customs superintendent was detained and two gold biscuits were recovered from him. The customs department is trying to find a common thread to two incidents.
