Addressing the students, women's rights activist Harshinder Kaur said women's education had become important as better literacy would help fight social evils such as female foeticide and dowry. Nearly 600 people participated in a no dowry campaign and pledged against female foeticide.

"Youngsters will have to step up on the plate to fight against social evils. The tradition of dowry is directly linked with female foeticide and preferences for the male child," she said.

"The main purpose was to inform youngsters about the consequences of the tradition of dowry," she said.
