8 booked for rioting over college headship

The police on Tuesday booked eight persons on charges of hurting and rioting over the headship of Gobindgarh Public College.BA (final year) student Jaswinder Singh suffered minor injuries during the clash between two student groups on Monday.Station house officer (SHO) Mandi Gobindgarh Ajay Pal Singh said the incident took place when Garry Bhardwaj, a pass out from the same college, with his group entered into a scuffle with Jaswinder and other college students.

Singh said the incident turned violent when Bhardwaj pointed a country made pistol at one of the students. But one of the students managed to snatch the pistol away from him.

He said during the scuffle, Jaswinder suffered minor injuries and was admitted to the civil hospital from where he had been discharged after treatment.
Singh further said the police had registered a case against Garry Bhardwaj and seven unidentified persons under Sections 323, 147, 148, 25, 54 and 59 under the Indian Penal Code in Mandi Gobindgarh police station.

The SHO said it was the second such incident which had taken place in the college. Even two months back Garry Bhardwaj and Jaswinder Singh had entered into a fight over the same issue.
He said during investigation, it was learnt that Bhardwaj wanted to keep his say in college affairs and he was supporting another candidate of another group, whereas Jaswinder was supporting another group for the same post.
