The Clean and Green team of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Ludhiana on Sunday started a 'Campaign against pollution of water bodies' at Gill Bridge on Sidhwan Canal.
The AAP volunteers were seen cleaning the Sidhwan Canal and creating awareness among people about different causes of pollution of the water bodies. They also appealed to people to help reduce pollution of water bodies.
Carrying colourful placards and wearing their signature caps, the party volunteers could be fervently seen explaining to the passersby and enlisting them to this noble cause.
Project coordinator Colonel (retd) CM Lakhanpal said, "We are planning to take this campaign to the Buddha Dariya and finally the Satluj river with the help of AAP volunteers and environmental experts, so that the water bodies in this region can be saved from the monstrous pollution they are suffering from. This polluted water is leading to cancer in the region. The entire water system including the canals are so polluted that almost all aquatic life has vanished. The Buddha Dariya is now the "Sorrow of Ludhiana" and if no immediate steps are taken and the situation continues it will lead to a disaster. It is high time the government and administration wake up to the seriousness of the issue and take immediate steps to stop the pollution."
The Aam Aadmi Party also held membership camps at different places in the city. Early morning a membership drive was held at Rakh Bagh and then at Samrala Chowk, Shimlapuri and Gill Road in which a large number of citizens were enrolled as members of the party.
