AAP leaders visit riot-affected areas in Saharanpur
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders HS Phoolka and Harinder Singh Khalsa visited the riot-affected areas of Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) on Thursday.
Phoolka is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court who has been handling cases of 1984 antiSikh riots, while Khalsa is the AAP MP from Fatehgarh Sahib.
The duo interacted with people whose shops and other commercial establishments were destroyed in the riots. They also talked to members of Sikh and Muslim communities, besides Hindu organisations, and pleaded with them to maintain peace.
Khalsa told the victims that he met Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and appealed for maintaining cordial relations between Sikhs and Muslims. Khalsa requested Yadav that the miscreants who were trying to create discord between the two communities should be identified and dealt with sternly.
He said Yadav assured him that the Uttar Pradesh government would take appropriate steps.
Phoolka said shop owners told him that the administration had not given them any compensation for the loss of commercial properties in the riots.
He said the government should immediately conduct a survey and assess the losses suffered by the victims for commercial properties, vehicles and residential houses. He appealed to the victims not to destroy evidence till the survey was conducted.
