Despite attempts of the district administration and the police to prevent the child marriage, the family members married their minor children at Alipur Araian village here.
The police arrested the bridegroom and three other family members under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act for alleged marriage of a 13-year-old girl and 19-year-old youth.
The accused has been identified as Karan Thapa, groom, his father Dalip Thapa, mother Tara Thapa and the girl’s mother Sunita Rani.
All the arrested persons were produced before the local court on Friday. They have been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
The case was registered under Section 15 of Prohibition of Child Marriage Act at Sadar Patiala police station.
Sukhraj Singh, station house officer (SHO), said, “Father of the girl informed us and we recovered the girl from the house of her in-laws. After the preliminary medical reports, we have sent the girl to the child protection home.”
It is pertinent to mention that on the complaint of an NGO, Human Rights Organisation; the women development and child welfare department and police conducted several raids in the area to stop the marriage.
Shaina Kapoor, district child security officer, said, “We held various counselling sessions with the family members, but the accused people fixed the marriage even after warning of action.”
She added that the case has been put up before the child welfare committee and will comply instructions in the case.
