The Punjab and Haryana high court asks Northern Railways if trains, coaches can be added on Delhi route from Feb 12-26.punjab Updated: Dec 13, 2017 12:42 IST
The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday asked Northern Railways whether it could press into service more trains or increase the number of coaches of existing ones between Chandigarh and Delhi in view of closure of Chandigarh International Airport for two weeks in February.
During the resumed hearing of a petition on infrastructure-related issues at the airport, the high court (HC) bench of justices AK Mittal and Amit Rawal issued notice to Northern Railways after it was told that due to upgrade work of the runway, air operations will remain suspended from February 12 to 26.
The court was told that all airlines have already been informed about the closure to make required changes in their operations. Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), the airport operator, has been arguing that the closure was necessary to increase the runway length from 9,000 feet to 10,200 feet to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.
The HC has sought the railways’ response by December 20 and has also asked CHIAL to submit a status report on progress of the runway upgrade.
At present, the Chandigarh airport operates international flights to Dubai, Sharjah and Bangkok. It has 27 flights in domestic circuit connecting the city to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Srinagar, Leh, Jammu and Jaipur.
