The Congress workers blocked traffic for about an hour at the Post Office chowk here on Friday in protest against the imposition of property tax and other 'anti-people' policies of the SAD-BJP government.
Addressing the workers, PPCC member Raman Bahl said the property tax would reduce the house owners to the status of tenants in their own homes. Bahl said government's move to impose property tax was technically wrong because the people of the state were already paying house tax. He questioned how the people would pay two taxes for the same property. He said the state government was functioning like a private company where profit is the prime motive. He also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of law and order in the state. Addressing the protesters, PPCC vice president and Batala MLA Ashwani Sekhri said that the alleged wrong policies of the Badal government had driven the state to the brink of bankruptcy.
Congress MLA from Fatehgarh Churian Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa praised Bahl for organising Friday's protest against the anti-people policies of the government. He said that the Congress would continue to oppose the imposition of property tax till the government decided against it.
