Congress leaders in Doaba are confused and a little flummoxed over the distribution of work to the four new vice-presidents. The charge of Nawanshahr, the home district of party's Doaba in-charge, Tarlochan Singh Soondh, has been given to Malwa in-charge Charanjeet Singh Channi.
An authoritative stamp to the decision was given last week by PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa, during his visit in Nawanshahr on April 11.
Some party leaders have now claimed claimed that the distribution of districts has been done on the basis of parliamentary constituencies and as Nawanshahr comes under Anandpur Sahib parliamentary area, thus it has been given to Charanjeet Singh Channi.
Sources said that Soondh had objected over the decision as he is Banga MLA, an area in the district. He had also staked claim to Nawanshahr also on the basis that he was the Doaba-in-charge.
There are murmurs that the decision has a lot to do with the reported factionalism, sources within the party said.
With Channi to look after thedistrict affairs, Nawanshahr Congress MLA Nawanshahr Guriqbal Kaur Babli is a pleased lot as the decision is likely to mean the sidelining of party district president Satvir Singh Palli Jhikki, who enjoys a good rapport with Soondh.
Speaking with Hindustan Times, Nawanshahr MLA Guriqbal Kaur Babli said, "I was also under the impression that Nawanshahr will be looked after by Doaba-in-charge Tarlochan Singh Soondh. However, on April 11, new president Bajwa clarifiedthat Channi will supervise party affairs in her district."
A communication in this regard (a copy with HT) was also received on April 11, said Angad Singh, son of MLA Babli and Congress Youth leader.
MLA Soondh said, "Areas have been allocated according to parliamentary constituencies by the high-command and Nawanshahr comes under Anandpur Sahib parliamentary area which has been given to Charanjeet Singh Channi."
On a query on factionalism, he said: "Differences within party leaders are natural and are a regular feature, even within families. I and Channi, both are state vice-presidents, and the issue should not be overplayed."
Anandpur MP Ravneet Singh Bittu said that perhaps this was the first time when the party had decided to allocate work on the basis of parliamentary constituencies.
