According to inspector Sukhdeep Singh, station house officer (SHO), Division Number 8 police station, Kuldeep Singh head constable Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Dugri, was crossing the road outside mini-secretariat on Friday night. Meanwhile, a Toyota Fortuner hit him and fled the spot, leaving him injured on the road. Passers-by noted the SUV's number and sounded the police.

Singh was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

A case under section 279 (reckless driving) and 304-A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the SUV driver, who cops identified as Gagandeep Singh, resident of Kadian village. He is at large.

The police are also investigating whether it was a mishap or the accused hit the cop intentionally.

It is pertinent to mention that pedestrians are forced to cross the road outside the mini-secretariat, as the under-path has been lying closed and there is no foot overbridge on the spot. In absence of a medium to cross the road safely, pedestrians often meet with accidents here.
