Depressed over kidney ailment, retd Major hangs himself in Chandigarh

When the wife and daughter returned from the marker, they found the door open and Singh hanging from the ceiling fan. They raised the alarm, following which neighbours took Singh to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A 60-year-old retired army Major allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 71 on Tuesday.

The police said Maj Amardeep Singh (retd) took the extreme step while his wife Parneet Kaur and daughter, a Class-10 student, were away to a market.

When they returned home, they found the door open and Singh hanging from the ceiling fan. They raised the alarm, following which neighbours took Singh to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Parneet told the police that her husband had a kidney ailment and used a walker for movement. He was undergoing treatment at PGIMER, Chandigarh, and was dejected due to his illness.

The police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 Criminal Procedure Code, after sending the body to the Phase-6 civil hospital for autopsy.
