Wishing to become rich overnight, an unemployed doctor was among the three accused arrested by the district police on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in snatching `4.95 lakh at Lehragaga on July 21.
The accused have been identified as Malkeet Singh, who did his Bachelor of electro-homeopathy medicine and surgery (BEMS), Avtar Singh, a student of bachelor of physical education at Guru Kashi university, Talwandi Sabo and Nardeep Singh.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that the accused have confessed that they had planned to loot people outside banks on July 8 and 16 to become rich instantly.
On July 21, complainants Dharamveer Singh along with his father Mahender Singh fell prey to the accused, when the victims were returning home to their Gurnai Kalan village after withdrawing `4.95 lakh from a local bank.
The police said the accused waylaid them and snatched the money after putting red chilly powder in their eyes.
The police said they had set up a special check post near Jhajla village on Tuesday night where the accused were signalled to stop their car.
During the checking of the vehicle, the police recovered the money and weapons used in the crime and found that the car was with a fake number plate on it.
