Worrying about the cleanliness of hostel rooms at Panjab University (PU)? One of the student organisations Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) may come to your rescue.

Considering the fact that hostel students, especially the freshers, struggle to get their rooms cleaned and even fail to find a broom to clean it themselves, the ABVP leaders have provided a set of brooms in some of the Varsity hostels.

What may be called an election agenda, the ABVP leaders call it, ‘Our concern’ towards the cleanliness and the students.

“This initiative was started due to our own experiences. A week ago, around 3-4 students came to my room to borrow a broom. I gave them (broom) but they never returned (it). Broom is something we need daily to clean the room,” said Harmanjot Singh, state president ABVP.

He further added that the hostel rooms in PU remain in poor condition and the sweepers only clean the corridors. “This is why, we decided to distribute brooms for the convenience of students,” said Harmanjot.

ABVP leaders have distributed 70 brooms so far in different boys hostels. Harmanjot said that the brooms will also be distributed to girls, once they return from vacation.

Meanwhile one of the hostellers, Ranjan Kukreja who has been living in PU hostel since two years said, “There are days, when we do not have time to clean the rooms and have to ask the sweepers to do it. They charge us Rs 100.”

PUhostelerspay annual charges of Rs 2,310under the name of‘Routine hostel maintenance charges’ but many hostellers complain that the rooms and washrooms in PU are a sanitary nightmare. Also, a majority of complaints received by dean students welfare (dsw) and the students body is about thelack of maintenance, cleanliness and hygiene.
