Five arrested for preparing fake birth certificates

The city police on Wednesday arrested five members of gang involved in making fake birth certificates in the district. Harmanbir Singh Gill, regional passport officer (RPO), Jalandhar, had lodged a complaint with the Kapurthala police on October 21 alleging 19 people from the city had reportedly used fake date of birth (DoB) certificates to make passports.

The city police on Wednesday arrested five members of gang involved in making fake birth certificates in the district.

Harmanbir Singh Gill, regional passport officer (RPO), Jalandhar, had lodged a complaint with the Kapurthala police on October 21 alleging 19 people from the city had reportedly used fake date of birth (DoB) certificates to make passports.

After questioning six people, the police succeeded in arresting the accused involved in making of fake birth certificates.

“They charged `6000-`7000 to make a duplicate birth certificate, which was further used for preparing passport,” Jagjit Singh Saroya, superintendent of police (detective), said.

He said the police procured three-day remand of the accused from court.

“We are still investigating whether other people who are involved in the gang. All culprits will be arrested soon,” he said.

Sources said government employees of suwidha centre and civil hospital are also involved in these activities, as they provide required documents to agents for making fake birth certificates.

The accused have been identified as Sandeep Singh, who runs Study Visa Centre, Gurpreet Singh and Dhanpat Rai, who prepare passport files outside the passport office, while Kulwinder Singh and Prince of Kapurthala work as typists at the Kapurthala court.
