Punjab minister for forest and wildlife preservation, welfare of scheduled castes and backward classes, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot announced that the Punjab forest department will plant two crore saplings under green mission during July and August in the state.

“The government will also provide free saplings to various institutes that will assure to take care of the saplings,” the minister announced at the office of Punjab Forest Department Ludhiana on Thursday.

Addressing the media, Dharamsot said, “Punjab was once known for its forest lands but the previous SAD-BJP government has caused damage to the forests. Now, we will develop the forests.”

“I conducted meeting with officials today and discussed the further planning of plantation. We will plant saplings of two feet this year. From the next year, we will plant saplings of four feet high or above so that the animals cannot damage these,” he said.

On the issue of illegal axing of trees, the minister said that the forest department is taking care of the trees and those found illegally cutting down the trees will not be spared.

“For widening of roads, the trees are axed only after getting approval from the green tribunal. However, we are looking for vacant lands to form forest areas,” he added.

On being asked about misuse of forest lands, he said, “Forest lands that are under illegal possession are being freed.”

“We are planning to develop a big park at Khatkar Kalan. Besides, we will also develop a Tiger Safari in Ludhiana and other forest areas. I appeal to the people to cooperate us and invite organisations to come forward to support the government’s green mission,” he said.

Responding to a question over suicides by farmers, he said, “Nobody should commit suicide. Suicides are committed by the cowards.”

Meanwhile, he said that students from scheduled and backward castes will directly get scholarship amount in their bank accounts to avoid any kind of scam.
